Spaghetti Sauce

Since getting married, one of the things that has been hanging over my head, for better or for worse, has been cooking. The only times in recent memory of when I had to fend for myself on the food front was when I studied abroad in France and in my last year of college in San Diego. I live a sheltered life, I know.

But after getting hitched, I was determined. I was determined that I wouldn’t live a life of frozen food and take out. I was determined to learn how to cook. Actually, it all started after we got engaged. It was like all of a sudden, some switch was flipped and interest in the kitchen started to grow, slowly but surely. I subscribed to Cooking Light. I started to watch the Food Network, for informational purposes as well as entertainment. I started reading food blogs. I could hear the little voice in my soul saying, “What is the world coming to?!”

I was walking through the aisles of Kroger’s (a supermarket chain for those wondering what Kroger’s is), the first time I decided that I was going to cook after moving to Texas. I called my mom and told her I was tired of semi-prepared and frozen food for dinner. The frozen pizza and chicken strips were getting old, fast. So was eating out, not to mention getting expensive. So I asked her how to make spaghetti sauce.

Now after three short months of marriage, I’m able to cook something without looking at a recipe. I consider this some serious progress.

So here’s my recipe, a small twist on my mom’s instructions.

1lb ground beef or turkey
1 onion, chopped
3-5 cloves garlic, minced
2 14.5oz cans tomato sauce
1 can tomato paste
8 oz white mushrooms
1 1/2 Tbsp Italian Seasoning
1-2 Tbsp sugar
1 Tbsp Olive Oil
Salt & Pepper to taste

Brown ground beef/turkey in olive oil. Add chopped onion and minced garlic. Add cans of tomato sauce and tomato paste, stir. Add Italian seasoning, sugar, salt and pepper. Make sure to taste it and adjust until just right. Add mushrooms. Simmer for 15-20 mins. While simmering, cook your pasta of choice. My favorite is Angel Hair.

Magically, after a little work over the stove, you’ve got some yummy sauce!

Happy Monday!
