Red Velvet Cupcake in a Jar: Genius!

05.07.2010

By now, it should be clear that I’m a total red velvet nut.

Cent told me that I don’t really love cupcakes, I only love the red velvet variety. This is untrue. If I’m presented with a cupcake, 99% of the time I’d be likely to devour it in two bites. But he is right; I do have a special place in my heart for the Red Velvet cake, in any shape or form.

I can’t help it. They are shockingly red. They have a mysterious not-quite-chocolate-not-quite-vanilla flavor. They turn your tongue red. And they are delicious. And addictive. And amazing.

So, when I stumbled upon this Red Velvet Cupcake in a Jar on the Cakies Blog I just had to share.

Aren’t these CUTE?! And delicious?!

And if you were motivated and driven, they would make the ultimate wedding favor. At least for me. I’d probably love the bride and groom forever. And EVER. I told you I was a red velvet nut.

Happy Friday!

Red Velvet Review: Society Bakery

04.05.2010

Happy Easter everyone! If you celebrate Easter, I hope you had a blessed weekend and spent it with your loved ones.

And since someone recently told me that it’s not Easter without a cupcake, I’m reviewing another Dallas cupcake bakery: Society Bakery.

It’s located on lower Greenville, and the staff is super friendly. When I went in, I was greeted by a friendly face. I told her that friends had been telling me all about Society Bakery and that it was my first visit. As a result, they gave me a coupon for free cupcake on my next visit. Score!

If you love frosting, Society Bakery is for you. The cupcake is moist and delicious with an ample frosting to cake ratio. Their cupcakes were also the most red. However, I felt like they were missing the cream cheese frosting, and instead had the usual buttercream frosting.

As a cupcake lover, I relished the fact that their cupcakes were generous in size and quite substantial. Overall, yum!

Society Bakery also creates custom wedding and special event cakes. Check out their gallery of cake creations! Cake tastings for wedding take place Tuesday through Friday between 12 and 4. Brides, since they are very popular their schedule is booked until November 2010, however they can still take orders for wedding cupcakes and petit fours for pickup.

Happy Monday!

Red Velvet Review: Tart Pastry Boutique

03.16.2010

It’s time for another review on the local Dallas Red Velvet circuit.

Today’s Red Velvet Cupcake review is from Tart Pastry Studio at Lovers Lane and Inwood Road.

Let me start by saying that I almost didn’t find Tart. My GPS lied to me. That’s right, LIED. Do you ever have that problem?

Since I’m still new to the Dallas area, I rely on my GPS for most car trips, unless I absolutely know how to get there. Well, I typed in the correct address and it told me that I had arrived. But it was too soon. I tried to find Tart, but nothing screamed “Bakery!” Thankfully, my iPhone Google map showed me that I wasn’t that far off.

A new friend told me about Tart. She told me that I absolutely had to go, especially given my obsession with Red Velvet. The store was friendly and inviting, and I could have stayed in there all day long looking at all the different goodies.

The cupcake itself was delicious.

Moist.

A good cupcake to frosting ratio.

With cake sprinkles on top.

However, I was a little bummed that the cake wasn’t totally red. It was more faint red. But if it ends up in my belly that doesn’t really matter. Also, I was slightly disappointed that the frosting was generic buttercream instead of the traditional cream cheese frosting. However, since the cupcake had a good ratio between cupcake and frosting, the buttercream didn’t overpower the cupcake.

Overall, thumbs up.

Tart also gets extra super cool points for selling these babies. The elusive Red Velvet Whoopie Pies. That’s right, Whoopie Pies.

I recently saw these online on Bakerella. I really wanted to make some, but I didn’t want to eat them alone.

It’s kind of challenge to eat these without all the frosting coming out the sides. But it’s tasty and different. Since it’s more like a cookie, it has a different consistency and texture from cupcakes. And again, I think this Whoopie Pie would be kicked up a notch with Cream Cheese Frosting. Just Sayin’.

Whoopie Pie anyone?

They also make ALL KINDS of other pastries and sweet treats. Petit Fours, cakes, cookies, pies, brownies, etc. If I had easy access, I’d probably frequent them ALL. THE. TIME.

Definitely check Tart Pastry Boutique out.

Another year older…

02.23.2010

One of the things that is so amazing about social media is that on your birthday you can receive a ton of birthday love! This morning I woke up to so many birthday wishes in the form of text messages, Facebook messages, and Tweets. So awesome!

Cent woke me with a little birthday song before he left for work.

My parents and sister called me this morning to do the traditional birthday greeting, thanks family!

I spent the day working out as a preemptive strike to all the cupcake consumption that is about to happen. Seriously. I’m currently in possession of five different kinds of Red Velvet goodies. I know, I need to stop, but I can’t help it. And now that so many people associate Red Velvet with me, I can’t stop now! So I figured that I would do a little review of my Red Velvet cupcakes in upcoming posts.

I had the chance to catch up with one of my very best friends and bridesmaid, and we remarked that although we don’t talk very often, when we do get a chance to chat it was like no time had past at all.

So thank you family and friends for your birthday wishes. I feel so lucky and so loved. You make my heart smile.

And because posts are better with photos, here is the Red Velvet cupcake from Sprinkles. There’s one here in Dallas!

Happy Tuesday!
