Happy Birthday Dad!

02.02.2010

We have this birthday tradition in my family that started a few years ago. We go into the birthday celebrant’s room before they wake up and start singing a version of “Happy Birthday” while doing a little dance. So funny.

Well, since I’m in Texas and my parents are still in California, that wasn’t a possibility this year. However, I did call my dad this morning and gave him the best version of this tradition I could. He was still half asleep.

I’m so proud of my dad. He was part of the collateral damage as part of the “Reduction in Force” that his company in Silicon Valley went through in October 2007. We all kind of freaked out. Okay, we totally freaked out. But my dad was able to use social media to reconnect with all of his contacts of 25+ years in Silicon Valley. It was like he started using LinkedIn with one contact and three weeks later he had 500+ contacts!

Well, he doesn’t work in Silicon Valley anymore, but for the Catholic Cemeteries right next door to my old high school. Yes, I went to school next to the cemetery. We were surrounded by the dead, haha. And he’s loving it. For all the years he worked in Silicon Valley, I don’t think he’s ever come home as happy and stress free as he has since starting work there. The job is totally different – and no he’s not the undertaker – but he does counsel families in mourning on services.

Happy Birthday Dad! I love you and you’re the best! And you can start taking advantage of some senior specials! :)

My dad was totally excited about giving his toast at our wedding. He asked me how much time he was allowed to have. You can’t see me in the picture, but I’m totally in tears! (the good kind)

We danced to Stevie Wonder’s I Just Called to Say I Love You. Because it was my favorite song as a kid growing up.
