Happy Birthday, Lila & Granddaddy!

He used to sing “K-K-K-Katy” to me. (Although, it should be spelled “C-C-C-Catie.” Just sayin’)

She had an amazing collection of beautiful perfumes and jewelry.

My grandparents. On my mom’s side.

So there are some definite advantages to being the oldest grandchild.

Like being ooh-ed and ahh-ed.

Like getting all kinds of crazy attention.

Like getting to name your grandparents.

See, I call my grandmother “Lila” and when my grandfather was still alive, I called him “Granddaddy” and when I was really little, “Dada”.

When I was the only grandchild in town (there are now 14 of us), I think they tried to get me to call my grandmother “Abuelita.” Well, that four-syllable Spanish word wasn’t going to happen. At least not when I was under two years old.

So it came out “Lila” (pronounced “Lee-Lah”).

And it stuck. And we all call her that now.

It is kind of funny to me because the word in Tagalog for grandmother is “Lola” and I probably would have been able to say that.

And we called our grandfather “Granddaddy” because he was a Georgia boy. My Granddaddy was a Southern gentleman. So it would only be appropriate to call him such.

Today is both of their birthdays! Born worlds apart, my Lila in the Philippines and my Granddaddy in Georgia. They both lived through and survived their own tales of World War II. If you’d like to read how their worlds came together, you can read their love story that my Auntie Kathleen wrote celebrating what would have been their 54th wedding anniversary. Because without them, there’d be no me. :)

When I grow up, I want to look as fabulous as my Lila. Seriously, if you can correctly guess her age, you get some extra red velvet cupcake points.

Lila (right) in our wedding photobooth with her sister, aptly named, Lila Terry, looking fancy!

Happy Birthday Lila and Granddaddy! I love you!

P.S. When I Googled “K-K-K-Katy” and heard the song again on YouTube, it totally gave me goosebumps and brought me back to those moments with my Granddaddy. Amazing how music can stir old memories!
