It’s the Christmas season, which means that the radio is blaring with Christmas music and one particular song from The Sound of Music. You know, My Favorite Things? “Raindrops on roses, and whiskers on kittens”? My mom always asks why the radio stations play that song, since technically it’s not a Christmas or holiday song. Maria sings it to the kids after a thunderstorm. Hmmm.
Anywho, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite things at Christmastime.
Up until this Christmas season, I’d put up the Christmas tree at my house (aka my parents house). We had this fabulous 9ft tree (artificial, see above) and I would spend the better part of a weekend fluffing up the branches. Thank you for the ingenuity of pre-lit trees! Then, I’d decorate it with my mom and sister with our family’s collection of ornaments, old and new. Like the first ornament I EVER made in preschool. And my sister’s baby shoe. I think my mom would turn anything my sister and I made into an ornament if she could. Anyway, turns out this year, my parents have gone a little greener and bought a pre-lit LED tree. And even though we’ll be out of town for Christmas, I think we’ll get ourselves a little mini tree.
Holiday Beverages at Starbucks
I like Starbucks. A lot. I like the experience. I like that it’s dependable and predictable. I like that they have free Wifi and are pretty much everywhere. And I like their Peppermint Mocha during Christmastime. The red cup signals the start of the holiday season (which seems to start earlier and earlier every year!). Now, this is not to say that I don’t like little coffee shops run by mom & pop – I totally do. But when it comes to a chain coffee shop, I’ll take my Starbucks. I get totally lost and nervous when trying to order at Seattle’s Best or Peet’s.
Online Shopping & Wishlists
While I love going out to shop for Christmas, the hustle and bustle, the sales, and the crazy fun atmosphere, I also love the ability to shop ONLINE. With both of our family on opposite coasts, and air travel at Christmas, I love that I can order gifts online and send them to their recipient. With baggage fees increasing, and my inability to pack light, I’m going to try and send ahead as much as possible. Plus, if you travel with your gifts, you have to keep them unwrapped!
Oh and a super convenient thing that Amazon provides is Wishlists. I love their wish list function. And I love it even more when other people share their wishlists. This makes shopping easier AND you can give a gift that someone really wants! I know, it’s predictable and all, but at least you’ll know they’ll like the gift. Santa had a good idea…
Carol of the Bells is one of my favorite classic Christmas songs. It also makes me think of Home Alone. I like that Christmas music plays on the radio. However, when it starts BEFORE Thanksgiving, it feels weird to me. I feel like the kickoff to Christmas happens on Thanksgiving with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. After that, proceed with the Christmas tunes. Just sayin’
And the best part of Christmas, giving. “It’s better to give than to receive,” wasn’t made up for nothing. It’s really true. I love that the holiday season puts nearly everyone into the giving mood. I just wish it lasted throughout the year, and not just at Christmastime. And thanks to you, lovely readers, we are up to 61 cans! 61 cans for the North Texas Food Bank. Don’t forget the Giving is Awesome giveaway! You have until December 20 to nominate someone who needs it.
What do you love during the holidays?
