When I’m not photographing people, details are my favorite. Hands down. I just love the time, talent, and creativity that goes into a design for a wedding or event. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into a unique wedding, designed from the ground up. In 2011, I had the privilege of shooting lots of amazing details by many talented Dallas designers.

2011 was one of the fastest years ever. EVER. When I look back at some of the things that happened in 2011, and realize that it’s been almost a whole year since then, it totally blows my mind. Life, slow down a bit, will ya?

Anytime Session: Hilary

In many cases, November is the cut off month for portrait sessions in Texas. Because just like the crazy hot weather in the summer, it can get crazy cold. I definitely didn’t consider that when I knew I was moving here. Oh, and the rain that shows up from time to time. Luckily, we beat the rain, because shortly after the end of this shoot, the sky opened up. And it rained. A LOT.

Meet Hilary. She was the second place winner from my giveaway last month, and it was so fun to meet her and photograph her in the Irving Heritage District. I didn’t really know that my own city had a cute little downtown area of sorts. Hilary is an Emmy Award winner, TV host, and blogger. Hilary was so fun to work with, it almost didn’t feel like a portrait session, but more like friends hanging out. I love that!

Grapevine & Highland Park Engagement: Samantha & Jon

Meet Samantha & Jon, who are getting married in April. They are the picture of a dream couple to work with. Laid back, fun to hang out with, and down to earth good people. I’m excited because their working with one of my favorite wedding planners in Dallas, After Yes! And I’m extra excited because they’ll be having peach cobbler in lieu of a groom’s cake. It’s the little things, really.

They are just the sweetest couple and I had a great time on their engagement session. I know they were stoked to cross another item off their list as it grows closer to their big day.

We wandered the streets of Historic Downtown Grapevine, and it happened to be the Saturday before Halloween, so we spied a bunch of people in costumes, including an alligator, a cow, and a bunch of zombies. I love the old feeling of Grapevine with its abundance of brick walls and alleys, perfect little nooks and crannies for a photo session.

From Grapevine, we dashed across the Metroplex to Lakeside Park in Highland Park. It’s a lovely, quiet little park, and who knew there was a lake there? Although, I must warn you, there are some territorial ducks who quacked their little hearts out at me. Like, seriously.

I loved Sam’s dress! So pretty.

Isn’t this tree so cool?! It looks like it’s about to fall into the lake, but luckily for us, it was still well rooted in the ground.

Thanks Sam and Jon for a great time on your engagement session. I’m excited for your wedding in the Spring!

Ultimate Southern Challenge: Winner!

A few weeks ago, Lauren of Palm Papers and I teamed up to submit our project to Southern Weddings Magazine for their “Ultimate Southern Challenge: Mason Jars.” We came up with the idea of creating a “Sweet Tea Kit” in a mason jar, which is perfect for escort cards, favors or, centerpieces. Our entry made it to the finals, and between reader responses and editors votes, we won! Bragging rights, at least.

We met up at Celestial Park in Addison, and had a mini photo shoot on a park bench. Literally.

Want to create your own? It’s easy!

To assemble, simply fill each mason jar with a few sugar cubes, Lipton tea bags, and one small lemon (or other colorful fruit). Wrap each jar with a little baker’s twine (we love Divine Twine) and a small gift tag, and then give to guests as a sweet favor, or display on table tops as centerpieces or as part of the place setting to add a pop of color to your decor!

And, Southern Weddings just released V4 of their print magazine and I hear it’s amazing. I haven’t been able to snag a copy in Dallas yet (I checked a Tom Thumb and a Barnes & Noble, no luck), and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. Southern Weddings was one of the first wedding magazines I purchased after getting engaged. I have V1-V3! See if you can find me on this throwback post from 2008!

Dallas Arts Engagement: Sophie & Jarrod

Meet Sophie and Jarrod, the winners of my Engagement Session Giveaway from this summer. These two were seriously so fun and easy to work with that it didn’t feel like “work”. We just hung out and had a great time! And avoided security guards. Yes, security guards.

Sophie and Jarrod decided that we’d have a date night engagement session, ending with what they love to do, dining at great local restaurants. After a little research and some suggestions, we decided to start the session at the Nasher Sculpture Center and proceed to Tillman’s Roadhouse for drinks.

About the security guards. See, I did a little research of my own about the photography policies at the Nasher, and to the best of my understanding, photography of this sort is permissible. I told Sophie and Jarrod the game plan, that there could be a possibility of being asked to leave. I definitely lean towards asking for forgiveness instead of permission..And they were game. See? My clients are the best!

The Nasher had this gorgeous tree…A willow? Maybe.

I asked Jarrod to whisper something into Sophie’s ear…

After sneaking around…I mean, leisurely strolling around Nasher Scuplture Center, we headed over to the Bishop Arts District to one of my favorite Dallas restaurants, Tillman’s Roadhouse. Many thanks to the staff for letting me capture a few photos.

Sophie and Jarrod told me that you can usually find them trying new restaurants, and sampling new drinks.

The decor at Tillman’s is really cool, think velvet banquettes, wood walls, and chandeliers.

Featured: Southern Weddings & Go Vote!

I have a confession to make. I have Southern roots deeply planted in Georgia, but I didn’t know what Sweet Tea was until I met Cent. I remember he ordered it at a restaurant and I wondered, “Why is he calling it ‘sweet tea’?” From my experience growing up in California, everyone always just called it “iced tea” and they’d always add Sweet & Low or Equal. I’m still learning about Southern things.

Well, a few weeks ago, Southern Weddings put out a call for their Ultimate Southern Challenge: Mason Jars. I teamed up with Lauren of Palm Papers and came up with a Sweet Tea Kit in a Mason Jar. DFW Shootouts: Kristen & Brandon

I’m not sure what it is about October. Maybe it’s the pleasant weather. Maybe it’s the much needed rain. In any case, this second week of October has been all kinds of busy and it’s only Tuesday!

I’m excited to share the final couple who modeled for us during the Fall Dallas Shootout, Kristen and Brandon, who just tied the knot in Colorado this past weekend. Congrats you two!

I was able to catch the tail end of the shootout with Kristen and Brandon, and got a few shots indoors, after being outside in the humidity. Hickory Street Annex is a fantastic location for engagement sessions, especially if you need to take it indoors. There’s an abundance of natural light, paired with the clean, modern architecture.

Brandon worked the camera.

Kristen certainly has the fiercest of fierce expressions.

This last one is my favorite of the day…
