It was through a series of text messages and AIM conversations that you won me over. You had the courage to ask me out to dinner. Luckily, I had the courage to say yes. I remember (and will never forget) that you ordered a “cheeseburger without cheese” because a plain hamburger wasn’t on the menu. I learned you loved your parents, that your younger brother was in college, and that you decided to take the internship because you hadn’t found a “real” job.
Throughout dinner, while it was just the two of us, I still wasn’t sure if we were on a “real” date. I thought so, but just in case it wasn’t, I didn’t want to assume. But at the end of our meal, and the check came, you grabbed the check. I remember thinking, “I guess this is a date!” and my stomach flipped in excitement. It was my first real date.
Today is your birthday, and I want to say thank you for taking a chance on the girl across the hall. Who didn’t have it altogether. Who decided to spend four months in Florida as a Disney intern in order to avoid getting a “real” job. Thank you for seeing something in me that I didn’t see. For always seeing what I don’t see. For filling the gaps in my life. For using logic, when I’d prefer irrationality. It was six and a half years ago that we met, and I’m so thankful.
Happy Birthday love!
