Every summer, after basketball season concludes, Cent retreats to his man cave to play video games and gives me full control of the remote. It’s almost like summer hibernation. Because, as he says, “All the good reality TV is over” in other words, sports are over. (We’re not a baseball watching house.) And summer means that reality TV shows are rampant.
I’ll admit it, it’s totally a guilty pleasure. At least it’s just TV, right?
Recently, I caught an episode, okay, a marathon of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding on TLC. Speechless. I don’t really think I can describe this show in enough words. You just have to check out an episode for yourself.
I don’t watch Toddlers & Tiaras, but I’ve seen enough commercials for it, that I might as well have seen an entire episode. I don’t get it. Let kids be kids! I’ve never seen so much makeup on a five year old or so much pressure for them to win. A beauty pageant? Really?!
I never watched Miami Ink, but I have watched LA Ink, so last week, I tuned into NY Ink. It’s the guy from Miami Ink and he opened a shop in Soho. I’m not sure what it is, but watching them tattoo is fascinating. I’d never get a tattoo (1. I don’t know what I’d get 2. Needles poking ink into my skin freaks me out), but what these artist are able to do with ink and skin is amazing. Although, at the rate they they yell and cuss each other out, I’m not sure they’ll make it to the end of the season.
And let’s not forget about my favorite/awful guilty pleasure: The Real Housewives of New York and New Jersey. Oh my, these ladies never cease to…what’s the word…astound me with their “problems” and “issues”. I’d also like to add that many of them are not “housewives” having no husband or kids or running a household for that matter, but I digress. It just sucks me in. But they are NUTS. Just wait til the Beverly Hills & Atlanta seasons come back.
Finally, last but not least, Big Brother premieres this week on CBS. I blame my old co-workers in California for telling me about this show. I think I first started watching so that I’d know what they were talking about during lunch. Then, I was hooked. I’m pretty sure that my admission to watching any and all of these shows makes my mom shake her head at me. Sorry, Mom!
But seriously, I can’t wait until the regular season shows return. My favorites (that I could watch every day, twice a day, any time of day) are How I Met Your Mother (When the heck is Ted going to meet his kids’ mother?!), The Big Bang Theory (so geeky & funny), Parenthood (it’s gonna get juicy), and Glee (they make Glee Club cool…and Mercedes & Sam!).
Until then…pick your poison. Thankfully there’s also Netflix!
