I never thought that I would be one to enjoy going to boot camp.
Because I hate running.
Because I despise jogging.
Because I deplore the idea of working out before the sun rises.
What can I say, I was kind of a hard sell. But last year, as I was preparing for my own wedding, I knew that I wanted to kick myself into shape in those months leading up to the big day.
So I joined a boot camp out in California. If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, I highly recommend Alavie Fitness.
While it was intense, early, and I really had to hustle, at the end of the workout, I was so glad I did it.
Well, post-wedding, there’s this thing that happens. It’s pretty similar to when you first start college. But instead of calling it the “Freshman 15”, I’ll call it the “Newlywed 10. 15. Or 20.” Whatever the case may be. I suppose I figured that the wedding was over and I let myself indulge in food and eat. EVERYTHING.
At the beginning of the year, I started going to boot camp classes at the North Dallas Boot Camp. The classes are intense, and it makes for a really killer workout. Trust me, change is happening. And Mario Esparza, the guy behind it all, is an awesome instructor! He himself is a testament to success. Just check out the NDBC website. Here’s a photo of Mario (in orange) in teaching action.
Sometimes, I think that “boot camp” classes tend to get a bad connotation of being “military-style” or involves getting yelled at by a drill-sergeant.
And I’m sure those types of classes are out there, but in general, boot camp classes involve cardio and strength circuits. And Mario teaches boot camp in a way that is not intimidating and even makes it fun. And sweaty. He also shares information for how to change your diet to eating real food, which is all the buzz these days with the documentary Food, Inc. and the new reality TV show, Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.

Boot camp is intense.
Boot camp will kick your butt.
Boot camp will change your mind about working out and what you are eating.
But it’s totally worth it!
