They had an unlikely love story. Their first official “date” was them being shoved into a cab and sent to the movies by her choir director. Turns out she had to pay for the movie, too. It was Rambo, no less. Very romantic.
My mom and dad met back in the day in the Philippines, through my dad’s brother. My mom and my uncle both went to University of the Philippines, and knew each other from the Concert Chorus. My uncle was looking for a date for my dad, who was going to a prom-like function. My mom’s initial reaction was, “What kind of a loser needs his brother to find him a date?” and turned down the idea. Little did she know what the future would hold.
My dad went to a different university, the University of Santo Tomas, and was part of the first graduating class earning degrees in Electrical Engineering. This was the pre-computer, pre-Internet world. My dad, being the true electronics geek that he was, went to help out with the lighting for my mom and his brother’s concert production. My mom thought he was cute. My dad thought she was cute. And the rest is history.
Even if their first date was watching Rambo.
My parents are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary this year. They’ve been nothing short of the best parents ever. Always supportive, ever encouraging, and a great example of a marriage and partnership that works. They are simply the best!
They are celebrating the big 3-0 on a cruise this weekend. They deserve it!
